Summary

Progress in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease has been minimal since it was first described by Alois Alzheimer. He identified plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain of a 50-year-old woman experiencing psychiatric and neurological changes. For decades, Alzheimer’s has been viewed primarily as an amyloid plaque problem, leading most research to focus on plaque removal as the key to treatment. However, pharmacological efforts to dissolve amyloid plaques have largely failed. Autopsies have revealed that some individuals die with significant amounts of both plaques and tangles yet never develop dementia. The latest evidence highlights the crucial role of brain inflammation, particularly through activated glial cells, in the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease. In this webinar, we will take a multidimensional approach to understanding and addressing the silent epidemic of Alzheimer’s disease. Learning Objectives: 1. Examine the role of microglia, oxidative stress, and immune-mediated inflammation in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. 2. Understand how diet, protein misfolding, heavy metals, and cholesterol metabolism (including ApoE4 genotype) influence Alzheimer’s risk. 3. Explore the connection between the gut and oral microbiome and their impact on brain health and Alzheimer’s progression. 4. Identify integrative strategies for prevention and intervention based on emerging research.
